Log in The man who fatally shot a teenager who killed a teacher and three students at an Oregon elementary school told a 911 operator “I’m about to go kill this kid,” it has emerged. Kaylub Giamanco has been hailed as a hero for intervening during the deadly rampage at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend in October. The 36-year-old, a local carpenter, was driving home to eat lunch when he saw a teen, dressed in black, firing a shotgun at a pickup truck and scaling the perimeter fence to the school. The teen was later identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II. Giamanco retrieved a .40-caliber handgun from his truck console, loaded a magazine and called 911 before heading onto the property. The tense call, lasting a little more than a minute, was released Tuesday. In it, Giamanco told the 911 operator that there was “someone with a gun” at the school that his daughter attended. “I have a gun and I will shoot them right now,” he said. The operator told him: “Don’t do anything, let me get an officer there.” They then talked over each other, with Giamanco sounding increasingly frustrated. “I’m about to go kill this kid,” he told the 911 operator. A few seconds later, he said that the shooter was entering the building. The operator asked if the shooter was firing, and Giamanco said yes. The operator tried to get more information, but the call ended. The teen had shot his way through locked doors to get into the elementary school, killing three children and a teacher in a special needs classroom. Another student was critically injured and a teacher was injured and hospitalized. Giamanco earlier told Oregon Public Broadcasting that he heard children “pleading for their lives” when he entered the building. “I started hearing gunfire and I just started army crawling faster and faster, and I told myself this is probably the last thing that I’m ever going to do.” He fired at the gunman once and he dropped to the floor, but discharged two additional rounds when the gunman reached for his weapon again. “He was scrambling for his weapon,” Giamanco said. “I looked at him and I shot him two more times to make sure that he couldn’t move because I was afraid of him shooting anybody else.” Police have said that Giamanco’s actions prevented further loss of life at the 400-student campus, and President Donald Trump praised him as “a great hero that went in and did the business.” However, he earlier said that he was overcome with grief for the students that he could not protect. “I want to apologize for not saving their babies,” Giamanco told OPB. “The gratitude for saving people’s children is awesome, but there were ones that I didn’t save.”
