The royals sat side-by-side in the stadium’s VIP box on Tuesday night, alongside a crowd of 80,000 football fans. According to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona received formal confirmation of the royal pair's attendance ahead of the match. While William and George cheered on Aston Villa, their hopes were quickly dashed as Barcelona won over the England team in a 3 - 0 victory, much to the royal’s dismay. Despite the game quickly turning in favour of the Spanish home team, William and George still seemed to enjoy themselves at the international match, with the pair even sharing a sweet moment. In one photo, a tired looking George can be seen resting his head on his father’s shoulder, sending royal fans into a frenzy online. One fan wrote on X: “This is major!!! A 13-year-old son totally loving and feeling safe in the embrace of his father … that’s not very common, I assure you. This is beautiful to see.” Another added: “Aww, Prince George might be a teenager now, but he still leans on Dad. So sweet!!” While another fan wrote: “This pic speaks volumes about father and son. Love, comfort, safety and the warmth of a father embracing his son.” Someone else added: “You're never too old for a cuddle from your parents…” George’s appearance at the football game is the first time he has been seen in public since starting his secondary schooling at Eton in September, where he is currently believed to be on his half-term break. The trip to Spain was not Prince George's first European away day with his father to watch a football match, as in 2025, George accompanied William to Paris to watch Villa compete in the Champions League quarter-finals. Just hours after the trip to Barcelona, it emerged that William made another incognito visit just weeks earlier as he spoke to firefighters while in Wales. The trip, which was not announced at the time, took place on the day the Prince of Wales visited Aberfan with the King and Queen to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the disaster. William made the unannounced visit to frontline fire crews from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service in Treherbert in October to thank them for their work during the devastating wildfires that ravaged the country this summer. He was shown the drones they used to identify and track blazes, and met volunteers and members of the community to hear about how they came together to tackle the fires. The prince told firefighters this summer was the first “where I’ve felt generally worried about the scale of the wildfires in the country”, according to BBC Wales. He added: “We might go again next season… it’s quite a terrifying prospect if we’re not… on the ball.” Wales experiences around 60 percent of all UK wildfires, and dealt with four major incidents in the summer, with 14 consecutive incidents at one time in August and fire zones in more than 50 locations. The prince told the crews: “This is why I wanted to be here today to say thank you to all of you because it was a hell of an effort. I had loads of people talking to me about the fires through the summer and where they were on the news, watching it as well. “It feels like this is something we are going to have to live with as a country, well as a world now, probably in most cases, every summer but being prepared and knowing what we are facing is going to be crucial.” He added: “You saved a lot of people’s houses, a lot of land, and …. a lot of lives saved as well. It was a gargantuan effort by all of you, so well done.”
