Qualcomm to Build Equipment for SpaceX’s US Mobile Phone Network
Qualcomm Inc. will supply hardware components for SpaceX’s planned nationwide terrestrial wireless network, the latest sign that Elon Musk’s rocket and satellite company is committed to challenging the biggest players in the US mobile industry.
SpaceX will use Qualcomm Dragonwing components in cell tower installations that enable the flow of calls and data, as well as some of Qualcomm’s proprietary software that will act as the brains of the network, the San Diego company said. The two signed a multiyear agreement under which Qualcomm will build “tens of thousands of cell sites” in a 5G network, with deployment beginning next year.
