Old-fashioned baby name enters the top 10 this year as parents embrace traditional choices The top 10 baby names this year include old-fashioned newcomers with a vintage flair If you're expecting a new addition to the family this year, one of the most thrilling parts of the journey is settling on a name. Finding the ideal baby name can be a lengthy process, with excited parents-to-be drawing inspiration from all manner of places. Pop culture, art and history are all common sources when it comes to drawing up a shortlist — and a handful of vintage baby names are now making a notable comeback. According to Baby Centre, this year's top 10 baby names in the US features some fresh faces. These names haven't previously featured in the top 10, and they certainly carry a distinctly old-fashioned charm. For girls, the names Evelyn and Eliana have both broken into the top 10. Evelyn comes in at number nine on the list, while Eliana claims the number two spot. Although Eliana has been a firm favourite for some time, Evelyn is a new entry. Originally used as a male name and surname, Evelyn is now given almost exclusively to girls. The name carries several meanings depending on the language. Its Germanic and Norman origins suggest it derives from the Old French Aveline, meaning "desired" or "wished for". It also shares a root with the Old French avellana, meaning "hazelnut". It is also linked to the Hebrew name Eve, and if connected to the traditional Irish Éibhleann, it can additionally carry the meaning of "radiance". For boys, the name Elias has broken into the top 10 most popular names for the very first time. It currently sits at number seven, while the similar name Elijah holds the number four position. Elias was once an incredibly popular name in the late 19th and early 20th century but fell out of favour until recently. Alongside other "grandparent" names such as Silas, Theodore and Arthur, Elias carries a certain old-world charm. It is the Greek and Latin translation of the ancient Hebrew name Eliyahu (anglicised as Elijah), which combines eli meaning "my God" and Yahu - a shortened form of Yahweh.
