A British man in the Democratic Republic of Congo will be brought back to the UK for treatment after testing positive for Ebola, the Government has said.
The patient, identified as a healthcare worker by the news agency Reuters, is expected to be flown back to Britain by medical evacuation, though it is not clear when the flight will take place.
A UK Government spokesperson said that the UK has 'well-established procedures' for cases like this which have been activated.
THE FCO spokesperson said: “A British citizen currently in the DRC has tested positive for Ebola. The UK has well-established procedures for dealing with cases like this, and those processes have been activated. Further information will be shared in due course as appropriate. The risk to the UK public from Ebola remains low.”
More than 5,000 people have died in the DRC's deadliest-ever Ebola outbreak, which began in May and has seen more than 10,300 confirmed cases.
A fatality rate of 48.6 per cent was reported at the end of last month for the illness. There are no approved treatments or vaccines to combat the disease, which is caused by the Bundibugyo virus.
The World Health Organisation has warned that the outbreak is on course to surpass West Africa's 2014-2016 epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people.
Only four cases of Ebola have ever been confirmed in the UK, including three involving health workers who responded to the outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2015.
Last week, an Ebola patient was medically evacuated from Nigeria to Switzerland. Since May, two patients have been medically evacuated to Germany and one to the Netherlands. A fourth case was reported in France in July. All four people worked in healthcare or humanitarian roles in affected areas of the DRC, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
