Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, has delivered a message to disaffected conservatives after the Republican Party was wiped out at Tuesday’s midterms, losing control of Congress.
On a magnificent night for Democrats, the opposition made a net gain of seven seats in the Senate and 30 in the House of Representatives as voters delivered a stunning rebuke to President Donald Trump over the Iran war and inflation.
Responding in a lengthy post on X, Kirk said that her late husband’s grassroots political organization was “always bigger than one election” and had been intended as “a permanent, year-round operation” that was ready for both “victories and setbacks.”
“Democratic socialist candidates made the cost of gas, groceries, and housing the center of their campaigns,” she said of this year’s midterms, suggesting their economic message had resonated because “nearly half of Americans don’t have a 401K and just want to put gas in their trucks, put food on the table, and provide a good life for their families.”
She warned against socialism, however, claiming it is “at odds with the free enterprise, individual liberty, and opportunity” while expressing sympathy for citizens looking for alternatives.
Kirk warned Republicans against surrendering to “finger-pointing” and “in-fighting” and declared: “Our history reminds us that moments of disappointment can actually be moments of renewal and infinite opportunity.”
Reflecting on her late husband, who was shot dead by a sniper while addressing students at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University on September 10 last year, she said: “I miss Charlie so much every single day, but especially on a day like today. He always said that when things are going well, we need to stay humble.
“And when things aren’t going the way we want, we need to stay positive, keep our faith, and get back to work.”
Erika Kirk wound up her post by pledging that TPUSA would study Tuesday’s results in search of “conservative, free market solutions” to voters’ problems and keep on “building the permanent infrastructure Charlie envisioned.”
“If you woke up feeling discouraged today, there’s more important work to do than ever,” she concluded. “Our principles haven’t changed and neither has our mission… Onward.”
Vice President JD Vance has led the inquest for the Trump administration by conceding in a post of his own that the Iran war had cost their party, a sentiment even the president has broadly agreed with – while also blaming his own candidates and conservative cable news channels for the disaster.
