Cristiano Ronaldo announces Portugal retirement in emotional video
Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football on Thursday, November 5, through a five-minute video shared on his official social media accounts, including X. The caption read “Portugal estará sempre em mim”, translated as “Portugal will always be in me”, a message he repeated at the end of the video.
Reading from printed pages, Ronaldo addressed the Portuguese public directly, describing the decision as difficult and bringing to a close a journey that began in August 2003.
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our National Team.”
He acknowledged the significance of the decision before confirming that his time representing Portugal on the pitch was over.
“Today, my journey on the pitch with the National Team comes to an end.
I leave with my head held high.”
He finished by reflecting on what wearing Portugal's number 7 shirt had meant to him, making clear that his connection with the country would remain long after his playing career for the national team.
“The number 7 shirt will remain. The pride of having worn it will be mine forever. Portugal will always be a part of me.”
Ronaldo made his senior international debut in August 2003 and went on to represent Portugal across six World Cups and multiple European Championships. He captained the country to three major senior honours: the European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Portugal's exit from the 2026 World Cup marked the end of his tournament career. The team lost 1-0 to Spain in the round of 16 in Dallas on July 6, with Ronaldo confirming afterwards that it had been his final World Cup appearance. He subsequently brought his international career to a close with a record 146 goals in 234 appearances.
Cristiano Ronaldo's records in men's international football
Ronaldo leaves Portugal with a collection of records that extends across international goalscoring, appearances, tournament football and longevity. Several of those achievements are global firsts, while others place him at the top of the European and Portuguese record books.
1. Most international goals in men's football – 146Ronaldo finishes as the highest goalscorer in the history of men's international football, with 146 goals for Portugal. He broke the previous world record on September 1, 2021, when he scored twice against the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifying match in Faro-Loulé.
The goals took his international tally to 110 and 111, moving him beyond the previous benchmark of 109 set by former Iran striker Ali Daei. Daei had been the first male footballer to reach 100 international goals, establishing a landmark that Ronaldo eventually surpassed. Lionel Messi joined the group of players to have scored at least 100 international goals on March 28, 2023.
Ronaldo's final tally of 146 extended the record considerably beyond the mark he inherited from Daei and made him the first player to reach that figure in men's international football.
2. Most international appearances in men's football – 234Ronaldo also retires as the most-capped male international footballer, having represented Portugal 234 times. His appearances span more than two decades, from his debut in August 2003 through the 2026 international campaign.
The record reflects his longevity at the highest level of international football, with Ronaldo remaining a regular presence for Portugal across successive generations of players, different managers and major tournament campaigns.
He also became the first footballer to reach 200 senior international appearances, achieving the milestone against Iceland in June 2023. He went on to add another 34 caps before bringing his Portugal career to an end.
3. First player to score at six different FIFA World CupsRonaldo became the first player in men's football history to score at six different editions of the FIFA World Cup. His goals came at the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
The landmark was completed during Portugal's group-stage campaign at the 2026 World Cup, when he scored against Uzbekistan. Having already found the net at each of the five preceding tournaments, the goal made him the first player to score across six separate editions.
His six appearances at the tournament also put him in a category of his own in terms of longevity, with his World Cup career stretching across 20 years.
4. Second-most appearances in FIFA World Cup history – 27Ronaldo made 27 appearances across his six World Cup campaigns, leaving him second on the all-time list of appearances at the tournament. He also holds the record for the most World Cup appearances by a Portugal player.
His tournament history began in Germany in 2006 and continued through South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022 and the 2026 tournament in North America.
5. Portugal's leading World Cup goalscorer – 11 goalsRonaldo scored 11 goals across his six World Cup appearances, making him Portugal's all-time leading scorer at the tournament.
His goals came across different stages of his international career, from his first World Cup campaign in 2006 through to his final appearance in 2026. The tally also places him among the most prolific goalscorers in the competition's history.
6. Most goals in UEFA European Championship final tournaments – 14Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored in the final tournaments of the UEFA European Championship, with 14. His goals came across six editions of the competition, another record for the most appearances at the tournament.
He first featured at Euro 2004, when Portugal reached the final on home soil, and continued to represent his country at the tournaments in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. His record-breaking run across six editions made him one of the defining players in the competition's modern history.
7. Most appearances at the European Championship final tournaments – 30Across those six tournaments, Ronaldo made 30 appearances, the highest total in the history of the European Championship. His record reflects his sustained involvement in the competition over two decades, from his first appearance as a young forward in 2004 to his later campaigns as Portugal captain.
8. Most European Championship goals including qualifying – 55Ronaldo's European Championship goalscoring record extends beyond the final tournaments. Including qualifying matches, he scored 55 goals, giving him the highest overall tally in the competition's history.
The figure combines his 14 goals at the final tournaments with his contributions during qualifying campaigns, where he repeatedly helped Portugal secure places at the competition. It is a measure of his influence across the entire European Championship cycle rather than only the matches played at the finals.
9. Most hat-tricks in men's international football – 10Ronaldo also holds the record for the most hat-tricks in men's international football, with 10. The achievement underlines his goalscoring consistency for Portugal, with multiple goals in a match becoming a recurring feature of his international career.
Alongside those 10 hat-tricks, he also scored four goals in a single international match on two occasions, further demonstrating the scale of his contribution to Portugal's attack.
10. Goals in 23 consecutive calendar years for Portugal – 2004 to 2026Ronaldo scored for Portugal in 23 consecutive calendar years, from 2004 through to 2026. His international career began in August 2003, but his run of scoring in successive calendar years started the following year and continued without interruption until his final season.
The record captures a level of sustained goalscoring across an unusually long international career, spanning his development from a young forward into Portugal's captain and all-time leading scorer.
Three major international titles with Portugal
Ronaldo's individual records were accompanied by three major trophies with Portugal, the first senior international titles of his country's history in the competitions concerned.
- UEFA European Championship – 2016: Ronaldo captained Portugal to their first European Championship title in France. Portugal defeated the hosts 1-0 after extra time in the final, despite Ronaldo having to leave the match through injury in the first half. He remained involved from the touchline as his team secured the trophy.
- UEFA Nations League – 2019: Portugal won the inaugural Nations League tournament on home soil, defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final in Porto. Ronaldo captained the side and played a central role in their run to the title.
- UEFA Nations League – 2025: Portugal claimed their second Nations League title in 2025, giving Ronaldo a third major senior international trophy as captain. Following Portugal's exit from the 2026 World Cup, he referred to the three titles he had won with his country.
Ronaldo's international career therefore ends with more than two decades of service, three major trophies, six World Cups and records for both goals and appearances that place him at the summit of men's international football.
