US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is considering resigning from the Trump administration to run for president in 2028, according to reports. It comes as US President Donald Trump's inner circle faces a major shake-up following a crushing midterm defeat to the Republican Party.
Mr Rubio is reportedly one of five members of President Trump's current cabinet who are thought to be preparing to jump ship. His race for the Republican candidacy in 2028 would likely see him go head-to-head with Mr Trump's right-hand man, US Vice President JD Vance.
The report from The Independent cited anonymous sources who are said to be close to Mr Rubio. A Republican source reportedly told the news outlet, "Rubio will be gone after the midterms.
"There will be about four or five them running for the hills. The country has completely turned against Trump. People cannot even say where Iran is on a map and do not get this war."
Mr Rubio's office has been quick to shut down the reports. Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary of state, told NewsNation, "This is complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid.
"The Secretary has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump’s administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax," he added.
The US leader said Tuesday night that he does not plan to make changes to his cabinet.
News of a potential White House shake-up follows bloodshed at the polls for the Grand Old Party (GOP) on Tuesday, with the Democrats winning both the House and Senate.
Multiple members of President Trump's cabinet could become the renewed targets of impeachment investigations when Democrats are sworn in early next year. Among the list of those who could face renewed scrutiny are Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. and Education Secretary Linda McMahon.
They were all subjects of impeachment investigations or inquiries prior to the midterm elections.
