Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam was stretchered off the field after twisting his ankle while fielding on the second morning of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet on Friday.
The incident took place in the 78th over of West Indies' first innings when Shadman chased a ball played towards fine leg by Amir Jangoo. The opener slipped while trying to stop the ball and immediately went down in pain near the boundary. He remained on the ground for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher.
Shadman has been taken to hospital for an MRI scan and is currently under observation. A decision on his availability for the remainder of the match will be taken after the scan results.
Morning dew had left the outfield wet and slippery near the boundary ropes, The Daily Star reported. Earlier in the day, Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud had also slipped while attempting to stop a delivery.
"He twisted his left ankle and was taken to hospital for an MRI scan," BCB physio Bayzediul Islam said in a statement.
Bangladesh had bowled West Indies out for 356 after lunch on the second day. In Shadman's absence, they sent Nayeem Hasan, who had not batted above No.
8 before this match, to open alongside Tanzid Hasan.
Shadman had scored a century in the first Test, but it remains unclear whether he will be able to take any further part in the ongoing match.
Bangladesh cannot bring in a concussion substitute if Shadman is ruled out because of the ankle injury, which is unrelated to a head injury. This means they would have to continue with only 10 players for the remainder of the Test.
West Indies lead the two-match series 1-0.
