An investigation continues after reports of a firearms discharge near a school in Bedfordshire.
The incident, which Bedfordshire Police described as "shocking", took place just before 3.30pm on Wednesday on Grebe Drive in Leighton Buzzard. Officers said a lower school in proximity of the incident went into lockdown for a short period as a result.
Armed officers were sent out and a vehicle believed to be at the scene of the incident was identified. A police chase followed along the A505 and the care came to a stop on Porz Avenue in Dunstable.
This happened after the vehicle collided with an unrelated one, resulting in its driver suffering minor injuries. Three occupants of the suspect vehicle fled the scene on foot, police said.
Two ran in the direction of the woodland near Nimbus Park, with one of them described as a black male with dreadlocks, wearing black clothing with white socks and black sliders. The third man ran in the direction of Lovett Way.
Police have now appealed for anyone holding information about the incident to come forward. Detective Inspector Stephanie Garfitt, of Bedfordshire Police, said: "This was a shocking incident; the safety of the public is always our highest priority and we are following several lines of enquiry to find those involved.
“This incident happened in close proximity to a lower school, and as a precaution, the school carried out its safety procedures as a matter of course. This understandably adds to the concerns within the local community and we will maintain a high visibility presence while our investigation continues.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has doorbell or dashcam footage from the area, of either the activity in Leighton Buzzard or Dunstable to get in touch."
Anyone with any information about what happened is asked to contact the police quoting Operation Tanglewood.
