Inside WW3 nuclear doomsday bunker that's built for 80 people - and you can buy it for £245,000 A Cold War bunker built to shelter up to 80 people is on sale in Amsterdam for £245,000. The canal-side property comes with its own airlock and a private parking space, but what the buyer could use it for remains unclear If your property wish list includes a canal-side spot, 30cm-thick concrete walls and an airlock, a £245,000 Cold War bunker in Amsterdam that could tick all three boxes. The shelter on Postjeskade, in the city’s Baarsjes neighbourhood, started out as a sewage pumping station in 1940. It was converted into a fallout shelter in 1960 amid fears of nuclear war and was designed to hold up to 80 people. It was later used to store Civil Defence supplies. The 55 sq m bunker has 30cm-thick concrete walls, as well as electricity, water and internet access. It is spread over three levels, two of them underground. Visitors have to enter through a small brick building beside the canal and take a concrete staircase down to the two shelter rooms, which measure about 10 sq m and 17 sq m. The rooms are painted white and fitted with lighting and heavy steel doors. There is also an emergency exit, and fresh air comes in through a ventilation system fitted with sand filters. The former pumping cellar is on the lowest level and can be reached by a ladder through a hatch. The room measures about 18 sq m and is still in a rough condition, with some of the original pipe fittings visible. Estate agent Property Noord said: “For other use, adjustments will be necessary.” The bunker comes with a private parking space on the 76 sq m canal-side plot. The ground lease has been paid until January 31 2098. The property last sold for €15,000 in 2011. It was put up for sale again in 2022 for €1.1million but failed to find a buyer. Property Noord said the bunker was then “overgrown with ivy, inaccessible to most buyers”. The listing states: “The ivy is gone, and the cellar has been renovated and furnished in the style of the 1960s. Local residents are seeing for the first time what stood there all those years,” adding: "Now it is for sale again, for a fraction of the asking price from back then.” The new asking price is €295,000, but what a buyer could use the bunker for is still unclear. Hero Panman, co-owner of Property Noord, told RTL Nieuws the main hurdle was the site’s zoning. Municipal planning documents designate it for “traffic” purposes. Property Noord said it had already heard from 20 interested parties. The agent said municipal officials were open to discussing the zoning and that residential use was still a possibility. The property is being sold by tender. Bids were due by 5pm on 6 November, and the sellers hope to complete the sale by 24 December.
