3 things to know about Stephen Miller, new White House chief of staff The elevation of Stephen Miller within the White House has sparked outrage among Democrats and suggests President Donald Trump is doubling down on his policy agenda in the wake of Republican midterm losses. Here’s three things to know about Trump’s new chief of staff: He has long railed against political correctness: Miller was raised in Santa Monica, California, where he began to speak out as a teenager, eventually becoming a prominent voice on issues such as race, gender and immigration. He has previously described himself as a conservative populist and said he felt a “jolt of electricity to my soul” when Trump announced his presidential run. He is a Trump loyalist: Now 41, Miller first joined Trump’s team in 2016 and has since grown in influence, dubbed the “ideological id of the MAGA movement” by former White House strategist Stephen K. Bannon. He recently served as White House deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser. He is the architect of several controversial policies: Miller has broad sway over policy and has been the force behind controversial initiatives including the immigration crackdown, strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean, the raid on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and Trump’s efforts to exert control over Greenland.
