The head of Poland's police service Marek Boron confirmed that one of the six killed was British, while three of the victims were Polish, with two yet to be identified
One of the victims of the shooting in Poland this afternoon is British, according to reports.
The Brit is among six people who were killed when a gunman drove into the Main Market Square in Poland’s second-largest city Krakow and opened fire.
Police exchanged fire with the gunman three minutes after they received reports of the attack, which came in just after 15:30 local time, head of Polish police Marek Boron said.
Mr Boron confirmed in a press conference that one of the six killed was British, while three of the victims were Polish, with two yet to be identified.
Video shared on social meia showed a car driving through cobbled streets with what appears to be the flash and sound of gunshots coming from it as police pursued the vehicle.
Another clip shows bystanders fleeing for cover as the car makes its way up the street towards them with the sound of gunshots ringing out and police in pursuit.
The suspect was shot by police and taken to hospital, according to local cops, who confirmed a major operation was underway following the incident.
The perpetrator and two police officers were among 16 people injured during the shooting spree, Polish Interior Minister Kierwinski said. He confirmed that a UK national had been killed while five other foreign nationals were among the injured.
Katarzyna Cislo, a spokesperson for the Krakow police, told TVN24 that the perpetrator was wearing military-style fatigues and he used a military-type long gun in the attack. Police found many other weapons, as well as ammunition, in his car. Ms Cislo added that the gunman acted alone.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has told reporters at a press conference this evening that police searching the suspect's home found the bodies of two women and one man, adding: “it looks like they are members of his close family”.
Images from the scene showed police officers and ambulances covering the area, which is in the centre of Krakow. A Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter also landed in the square.
A spokesperson for the local firefighters told Polsat News that the perpetrator fired a gun from a passing car.
A tram driver reported around 3pm that his vehicle was shot at from a man in a moving car while passing nearby the main square, the Krakow municipal transport company said. The window to the tram driver’s cabin was shattered.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he was “shocked and saddened by the appalling shooting” in the Polish city of Krakow, in a statement this evening.
"My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives, everyone injured and all those affected by this senseless violence," he added.
"The United Kingdom stands in solidarity with the people of Poland."
Polish Prime Minister Tusk declared November 8 and 9 days of national mourning, and police sought witnesses to the shooting.
