Dusting is undoubtedly one of the most tedious household tasks going. No matter how often and thoroughly you dust your surfaces, it won't be long before they look basically the same as they did before.
Because those irritating dust particles are so tiny and weightless, even the slightest bit of movement will send them soaring into the air, only to land on another surface moments later. And if you're dusting with a cloth or a feather duster, chances are you're not doing nearly enough.
Cleaning enthusiasts recently flocked to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Trick Facebook page to share their top dusting tricks, and one straightforward item makes all the difference.
The conversation was sparked when one group member, who also works as a house cleaner, asked for guidance on getting rid of dust in her clients' properties.
She said: "How do y'all dust without it getting everywhere? I cleaned a house with lots of sun shining through and you could see dust everywhere, even if I did it slower and more precise. I used swifter duster but it was horrible."
Luckily, the group members were quick to share their top recommendations, with one particular method proving especially popular — and it only requires one simple item that's available in most decent supermarkets, if you haven't already got one tucked away in your cupboard.

How to keep your home dust-free
According to the cleaning fans, damp-dusting is an absolute essential if you want a spotless home. One of them commented on the post: "Damp cloth - seems to stop it flying about everywhere!"
Another person wrote: "Damp dust every time. I'm a domestic cleaner and I damp a microfibre cloth slightly then use Fabulosa polish on surfaces. Stops dust flying about so much. Once I've done that I buff surfaces to leave them lovely and shiny. No complaints so far."
A third said: "I damp dust and buff over with a microfiber cloth or a old flannel."
Why is damp dusting so effective?
Damp dusting works far better than dry dusting because it genuinely traps and eliminates dirt rather than simply sending it flying into the air. When you wipe a dry cloth or feather duster over a surface, you create a cloud of dust that floats straight back into the room, settling down again shortly afterwards.
However, a damp microfibre cloth locks those tiny dust particles into its fibres, allowing you to physically remove them. The outcome is cleaner air and surfaces that remain dust-free for considerably longer.
You can buy specialist damp dusting sponges, but these aren't essential — a basic cloth is all you truly need. Use it to tackle your dusty surfaces and you should notice significantly less dust hanging around afterwards.
