First Lady Melania Trump attended a college football game in Louisiana — a state that didn’t go blue in last week’s midterm elections — yet was still booed.
The first lady was in Baton Rouge on Saturday to announce a partnership between Louisiana State University and her “Fostering the Future” program to provide scholarships for LSU students who came through the foster care system.
After the announcement, she attended the LSU-Alabama football game, where she received a shout-out and was shown on the big screen.
While she received some light applause at first, it was quickly drowned out by a loud chorus of boos, prompting the stadium to play music over the loudspeakers to drown out the negative response, as videos shared online showed.
Clips circulating on social media showed the first lady smiling and waving as the crowd seemingly soured on her.
The big screen also blasted a promo for her program’s collaboration with LSU.
LSU football players donned the first lady’s “Be Best” slogan on their helmets and jerseys as part of the initiative’s launch.
Trump and LSU secured $5 million to create an endowment fund for the scholarships, the White House said. It was not immediately clear where the money came from.
Melania Trump first began advocating for foster care issues after her husband’s first term ended in 2021. At the time, she created the “Fostering the Future” program to provide resources and support, including scholarships.
LSU is among more than 20 colleges and universities in the U.S. participating in the program.
Earlier this year, Melania was on Capitol Hill to push Congress to pass a legislative package that would broaden access to services for young people in foster care by updating a decades-old program. The measures cleared the House but are still pending in the Senate.
She also spearheaded an executive order signed by the president last November linking the federal government, colleges and universities, the private sector and charitable groups to create educational and employment opportunities for those in foster care.
Melania also created “Fostering the Future Together,” a global version of the program with more than 45 participating countries.
