In a statement, NT Police said the incident happened at 10:35am on Saturday at a store at a Katherine shopping centre. Police said the 33-year-old allegedly stole items from the counter area inside the shop before fleeing, with the two retail workers chasing after him. When the 18- and 20-year-old workers caught up with the man a short distance away, police allege they began a "prolonged physical assault", including "punching, kicking and stomping on him". "It is alleged he was also strangled," NT Police said. "He lost consciousness as a result of the assault, with nearby bystanders intervening to prevent further from occurring." The 33-year-old man was taken to hospital and was subsequently discharged. Police said the two store workers were also taken to hospital, having "injured their hands" in the alleged assault. All three men were remanded in custody and will face Katherine Local Court today. The 33-year-old is facing robbery charges, while the two young men will face charges related to the alleged assault, including an acts intended to cause serious harm offence and strangulation.
