More than half of clean energy schemes needed for Labour’s 2030 target offered grid connection
The 700 projects include wind and solar farms, battery storage, gas and hydro plansMore than half the renewable energy projects needed to meet the government’s clean power targets by 2030 are now able to plug into the electricity grid after years of delay, according to the system operator. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) has offered more than 700 clean energy projects in Great Britain a grid connection date since the start of the year, after a two-year process to unblock a...

Datacenter growth may run into a power wall by 2030
Energy consumed by datacenters is set to grow 26 percent this year thanks to AI, and grid supply may be unable to keep pace with demand by 2030, Gartner warns. The research giant expects global datacenter electricity consumption to reach 565 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2026, as power demand rises from 104 GW in 2025 to 132 GW this year. This is higher than the 500 TWh per year Gartner estimated two years ago that AI-optimized servers would consume by 2027.
UN calculates nation-sized environmental footprints for AI and data centers
UN calculates nation-sized environmental footprints for AI and data centers Andrew Zinin Lead Editor The environmental footprint of data centers already rivals some of the world's largest countries, according to a United Nations University report, which also predicts their water and energy use and pollution will double in just four years as use of artificial intelligence grows. Last year, global data centers used 448 trillion watt-hours of electricity, more than all but 10 countries of the...
‘Coal power has lost its status’: Solar power outstrips coal in US despite Trump's attacks
States won by Trump in the 2024 election accounted for 74 per cent of all solar capacity installed in the first quarter of 2026. Even as President Donald Trump boosts coal over clean energy, solar power is hitting new milestones in the US and remains the leading source of new power. Data released on 10 June by global energy think tank Ember, along with a report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and analytics firm Wood Mackenzie, show the continued growth of solar and decline...
Be less polite: How to cut your AI impact as UN report reveals data centre energy use rivals nations
"That extra ‘please’ you put there can make a huge difference,” says one of the report's authors. The environmental footprint of data centres already rivals some of the world's largest countries, according to a United Nations University report released on 3 June. Their water use, energy use and pollution is predicted to double in just four years as use of artificial intelligence grows.
AI could consume up 3% of world's electricity the UN warns
AI could consume up 3% of world's electricity the UN warns AI could soon use more water than we need to drink, UN report finds. One argument often used to quell concerns about the rising energy and resource demand of data centers is that artificial intelligence (AI) models will need less in the future as they improve and become more efficient. But this seemingly logical thinking is a trap, according to a new United Nations report that quantifies the environmental costs of AI.
Turkey, Australia to push for global electrification goal at UN climate summit
BRUSSELS — The hosts of this year’s United Nations climate conference want the world’s governments to support a collective target to electrify 35 percent of global energy use by 2035. Turkey, which will host the COP31 summit in the resort city of Antalya in November, said Tuesday the electrification goal would be a flagship priority of the conference, linking the push to soaring fossil fuel costs caused by the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. “By electrifying daily life, from...
