GCK-4 regulates apical actin organization and lumen formation in the C. elegans intestine

Epithelial tubes are an essential component of many organ systems. The formation of their lumens depends on the close coordination of epithelial polarity, the apical actin cytoskeleton, and apical junctions, yet the mechanisms that organize the apical cytoskeleton and junctions downstream of polarity remain poorly understood. Here, we identify the Ste20 family kinase GCK-4, the single C. elegans ortholog of the mammalian kinases LOK and SLK, as a critical regulator of intestinal lumen formation.

Immune-competent apical out airway organoids reveal distinct antiviral strategies of macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes during influenza infection

The respiratory mucosa is the primary entry site for influenza virus and early antiviral immunity is governed there by interactions between epithelial cells and innate immune cells. However, mechanistic insight into these interactions in a human context is limited. Here, we established an immune competent apical out human airway organoid model that enables direct epithelial infection and controlled integration of innate immune cells.

Vesicular pseudopodia define the fusion site on large secretory vesicles of the Drosophila salivary glands

Large secretory vesicles (LSVs) pose a scaling problem for regulated exocytosis. Their micron-scale dimensions greatly increase the vesicular membrane surface area, making productive engagement between the vesicular and target membrane fusion machinery unlikely. Broadband amplification of organ of Corti vibrations in the mouse cochlear apex

Mammalian hearing depends on the active amplification of sound-evoked waves as they travel along the basilar membrane within the cochlea. This amplification is mediated by the outer hair cells (OHCs), which generate force to enhance the vibrations of the surrounding structures. While OHCs at a given location only amplify basilar membrane motion for a narrow frequency range, recent measurements show that the amplification of motions deeper within the organ of Corti is much more broadband.
