Tetramerization and RNA-guided filament assembly control Schlafen-Argonaute antiphage defense
Two deeply conserved protein families, Argonaute (Ago) and Schlafen (SLFN), play defense roles in diverse prokaryotes and eukaryotes, including humans. Here, we identify a monophyletic group of proteins broadly distributed across bacteria and archaea that fuse a SLFN domain with an Ago core and a GHKL-family ATPase. Using SLFN-pAgo from Runella zeae as a model, we show that these proteins protect bacterial cells against bacteriophages by employing the Ago core as a guide-dependent sensor and...
Structural basis for chaperone-guided assembly of RNA-induced silencing complex
Abstract The RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), comprising an Argonaute (AGO) protein and a small RNA, is the central effector in RNA silencing. Small RNAs are loaded onto AGO as bulky duplexes in an HSP70- and HSP90-dependent process1,2,3, but the molecular mechanism remains poorly understood. Here we identify the human AGO–HSP90–p23 complex, which captures AGO in an RNA-free state, termed the AGO maturation complex (AMC).
Toronto: A travel guide to the 2026 World Cup host city
Canada's largest city will host six World Cup matches, including the co-host nation’s opening fixture. Canada's largest city will make history when it hosts the first men's FIFA World Cup match ever played on Canadian soil. Toronto welcomes six matches during the 2026 tournament at BMO Field, known as Toronto Stadium during the competition, including Canada's opening fixture.
Blue Origin explosion ‘huge setback for everyone in space community’, ESA chief says
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) chief told Euronews that the explosion of a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket, which plays a crucial role in NASA’s Artemis missions to return to the Moon, will cause significant delays. ESA’s Director General, Josef Aschbacher, was “saddened” and “concerned” by the images showing the explosion of a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket during an engine test at a Florida launch pad last week, saying the damage was “quite big.” Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, who founded the space...
