For women, living longer than men on average comes with a financial risk that experts say is worth preparing for — outliving their spouses and needing long-term care services. About 57% of Americans who reach age 65 will develop a disability serious enough to require long-term care, according to a 2022 report from the Health and Human Services Department. Roughly 1 in 4 women — 26% — will need such care for longer than five years, compared with 17.5% of men.
