Blue Origin explosion ‘huge setback for everyone in space community’, ESA chief says

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) chief told Euronews that the explosion of a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket, which plays a crucial role in NASA’s Artemis missions to return to the Moon, will cause significant delays. ESA’s Director General, Josef Aschbacher, was “saddened” and “concerned” by the images showing the explosion of a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket during an engine test at a Florida launch pad last week, saying the damage was “quite big.” Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, who founded the space...

ESA selects two new scout-class missions

ESA selects two new scout-class missions Lisa Lock Scientific Editor Andrew Zinin Lead Editor When it comes to understanding Earth and our changing environment, space is the place. Not only does it give us an overall holistic view of the planet below, but satellite-based imagery can transcend national boundaries and give us an understanding of key changes that often go unseen at ground level. Now, the European Space Agency (ESA) has chosen two new missions to address key questions in Earth...

Endangered Species Act listing is linked with greater research effort for U.S. butterflies

Conservation strategies for at-risk species can be aided significantly by research on topics such as ecology, life history, and threats, yet research effort is lacking for many species facing elevated extinction risk. Here we investigated whether listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) was associated with research effort for U.S. butterflies, and whether that effort was higher before or after ESA listing. We found that ESA-listed species had significantly more peer-reviewed...

Towards Event-Robust Acoustic Scene Classification

arXiv:2606.06921v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper introduces the Event-Shifted Acoustic Scene (ESAS) dataset, a novel benchmark for evaluating the robustness of Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC) systems against unknown sound events. Existing ASC datasets typically contain recordings of clean and consistent audio, while real-world environments often include diverse and unexpected sound events. To bridge this gap, ESAS simulates real-world acoustic variability by injecting...

Extracellular salicylic acid activates immune signaling through cell-surface receptors

Salicylic acid (SA) is a central immune hormone that accumulates in both intracellular and extracellular compartments during pathogen infection. While intracellular SA signaling is well established, whether extracellular SA (eSA) directly activates immune responses remains unknown. Here we show that eSA functions as an extracellular signal potentially perceived by the plasma membrane-localized lectin receptor kinases LecRK-I.8 and LecRK-VI.2 in Arabidopsis.

Glittering star cluster image reveals missing patch of stars: 'We were not looking for the gap, but we found it'

Glittering star cluster image reveals missing patch of stars: 'We were not looking for the gap, but we found it' The new view captures an irregularity in how stars are distributed within NGC 6397. A gorgeous new portrait of an ancient star cluster reveals an unexpected imperfection: a visible gap in the brightness of its stars. The stunning image, taken by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Euclid space telescope, captures NGC 6397 — one of the closest globular clusters to Earth.
