Acoustic disguising: a unified framework for cloaking and holography

arXiv:2606.08524v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Cloaking and holography -- usually treated as distinct problems -- are two limits of a single operation that we call acoustic disguising, realized here using immersive boundary conditions on a closed surface. Driving the boundary with homogeneous Green's functions suppresses any incident field inside the enclosed volume and cloaks unknown objects broadband; driving it with scattering Green's functions synthesizes a holographic scatterer...

PureLight: Learning Complex Luminaires with Light Tracing

arXiv:2606.04319v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We propose a neural formulation for estimating the appearance of complex luminaires. We focus on challenging luminaires with complex light transport (e.g., small emitters enclosed by multiple specular layers) that are difficult for (bidirectional) path tracing. To this end, we use light tracing to construct paths from emitters to the exit surfaces and formulate appearance estimation as a distribution learning problem.

Transcriptomic and proteomic responses to gas vesicle collapse in native and engineered bacterial systems

Gas vesicles (GVs) are air-filled protein nanostructures produced by microbes to regulate buoyancy and have emerged as powerful tools in biomedical imaging, particularly as acoustic reporter genes. Their mechanically robust shells enclose a stable air compartment, which collapses irreversibly when subjected to sufficient hydrostatic or acoustic pressure, leaving behind large protein sheets. This collapse phenomenon underlies key applications such as differential imaging and controlled...

World’s longest building cost £1.6bn to build and takes 40 minutes to walk across

World’s longest building cost £1.6bn to build and takes 40 minutes to walk across A vast industrial building in California is considered the world’s longest, stretching so far that it takes around 40 minutes to walk its full length A gigantic two-mile-long structure has long been regarded as the world's longest building — and it is so vast that experts say the curvature of the Earth must be taken into account when measuring it. The Klystron Gallery at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory,...

Amplified Arctic iceberg traffic reshapes benthic biodiversity

Abstract The Arctic is undergoing rapid warming, resulting in retreating sea ice and glaciers1, yet how cryospheric changes propagate into the deep ocean remains poorly understood2. Here we identify a climate-driven mechanism linking accelerating glacier disintegration to an increase in deep-sea hard-bottom habitats far beyond calving fronts. Seafloor observations in Fram Strait show a localized increase in the density and patchiness of dropstones delivered by debris-laden icebergs.

'Panicked' wallabies: Wildlife displaced for sports project, residents say

Reports of wildlife displaced at Fred Caterson Reserve as controversial sports project begins Wed 3 Jun 2026 at 6:42am In short: Residents are accusing a sports project of killing and displacing animals at Fred Caterson Reserve in Sydney's north-west. Three rugby fields and a car park are being built which The Hills Shire Council says will support local population growth. An activist group has taken the council to the Land and Environment Court, alleging a review of environmental factors is...

Systematic comparison of VMEC and HINT equilibrium calculations for finite-beta LHD plasmas

arXiv:2606.10490v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A systematic comparison between VMEC and HINT equilibrium calculations has been carried out for Large Helical Device plasmas to clarify the influence of the assumption of the nested flux surfaces at finite beta. Three vacuum magnetic-axis configurations, $R_{\rm axV} = \SI{3.53}{\, m}$, $\SI{3.60}{\, m}$, $\SI{3.85}{\, m}$, are examined for the beta values on the axis in the range $\beta_0 \in [0.0\%, 5.0\%]$. The magnetic-axis position, the...
