NMC flipflops, puts onus of patient appeals on health ministry
National Medical Commission (NMC) continues its flipflop over whether patients and their families should be allowed to file appeals before it. The commission decided in Sept 2024 that its ethics board would entertain all appeals, including those filed by non-medicos, and confirmed this decision in Dec 2025. Five months later, in May, the ethics board claimed any interpretation of the provisions of NMC Act ought to be done by the health ministry.
30 doctors in 9 states under scrutiny in Rs 2 crore AbbVie-sponsored foreign trip case
Thirty doctors who were found guilty of accepting a foreign trip worth Rs 2 crore to Paris and Monaco, funded by a pharma company, come from at least nine states. This was revealed in response to an RTI application. From National Medical Commission’s reminder to state medical councils (SMCs), it is clear that six out of nine councils have not submitted any action taken report to NMC despite the doctors’ names being sent to them last year.
