Fiber optic components enable high-performance 2-µm fiber lasers
Fiber optic components enable high-performance 2-µm fiber lasers Lisa Lock Scientific Editor Robert Egan Associate Editor Laser systems operating in the 2-micrometer wavelength range open diverse opportunities in medical technology, agriculture, and plastics processing. In the Eurostars project DECOMP, Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) has developed novel fiber optic components that overcome previous technical barriers.
Sensitivity increase of 3D printed, self-sensing, carbon fibers structures with conductive filament matrix due to flexural loading
Announce Type: replace Abstract: The excellent structural and piezoresistive properties of continuous carbon fiber make it suitable for both structural and sensing applications. This work studies the use of 3D printed, continuous carbon fiber reinforced beams as self-sensing structures. It is demonstrated how the sensitivity of these carbon fiber strain gauges can be increased irreversibly by means of a pretreatment by pre-stressing the sensors with a large compressive bending load.
Stress relaxation in fiber networks via force-dependent stochastic severing
arXiv:2606.01752v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Fiber networks contribute to the mechanical stability of various biological systems, from cells to tissues. Such systems have been modeled by networks of springs or fibers that exhibit rigidity transitions as a function of either connectivity or applied strain. For a fiber network under constant applied strain, severing can reduce the connectivity and destabilize an initially rigid structure.
Amazon, Corning sign multi-billion-dollar deal to boost fiber optics manufacturing in US
Amazon, Corning sign multi-billion-dollar deal to boost fiber optics manufacturing in US June 8 : Amazon said on Monday it has signed a multi-billion-dollar deal with specialty glass maker Corning aimed at boosting U.S. production of optical fiber and connectivity products that are used in data centers. Amazon, however, did not disclose any further financial details on the partnership.
Explainable deep-learning detection of microplastic fibers via polarization-resolved holographic microscopy
arXiv:2601.15769v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Reliable identification of microplastic fibers is crucial for environmental monitoring but remains analytically challenging. We report an explainable deep-learning framework for classifying microplastic and natural microfibers using polarization-resolved digital holographic microscopy. From multiplexed holograms, the complex Jones matrix of each fiber was reconstructed to extract polarization eigen-parameters describing optical anisotropy.
Deployed trusted-node quantum key distribution over 300 km with a multi-core fiber access link
Announce Type: cross Abstract: Quantum key distribution (QKD) is increasingly considered for deployment in realistic communication networks, where long distances, heterogeneous fiber infrastructure, and coexistence with classical traffic present substantial challenges. Here, we demonstrate trusted-node QKD between Link\"oping University and the Stockholm hub of the Swedish national quantum communication infrastructure over 270 km of deployed single-mode fiber, extended by a 33 km multi-core...

Passive all-optical synchronization for polarization-maintaining ultrafast fiber lasers
arXiv:2606.06799v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We have proposed and implemented for the first time to our best knowledge a passive and all-optical pulse synchronization for polarization-maintaining ultrafast fiber lasers. Specifically, the synchronization system was comprised of two independent Yb-doped and Er-doped mode-locked fiber lasers in a master-slave configuration. Master pulses were injected into the slave laser cavity consisting of a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, which...
Connectional neuroanatomy of U-fibers in the rhesus monkey brain
The superficial white matter (SWM), the region of white matter immediately beneath the gray matter-white matter (GM-WM) border, contains short cortico-cortical association fibers that interconnect neighboring cortical regions. The SWM is estimated to comprise the majority of axons in the cerebral white matter and is thus thought to play a major role in cortical information processing. Despite this prominence, and growing attention in the diffusion MRI field, the connectional organization of...
Firefighters face a higher risk of skin cancer, but nano fabrics with tiny, rough fibers can help keep them safer
Firefighters face a higher risk of skin cancer, but nano fabrics with tiny, rough fibers can help keep them safer Lisa Lock Scientific Editor Andrew Zinin Lead Editor Wildland firefighters are exposed to a mix of harmful chemicals in the smoke they breathe and the ash and soot that gets on their clothing. Over long assignments fighting fires that can last for days to weeks, those chemicals can be absorbed by their skin. Some of those chemicals are carcinogens.
