Light pulses uncover Higgs mode that reshapes perovskite crystal symmetry
Light pulses uncover Higgs mode that reshapes perovskite crystal symmetry Sadie Harley Scientific Editor Robert Egan Associate Editor Waves of light and sound interact to drive electronic and structural changes in a perovskite crystal. At the atomic scale, nothing is ever truly still. Materials that appear perfectly rigid and motionless to the naked eye are in fact swarms of vibrating atoms.
Low Level RF and Timing System Design for the Cool Copper Collider
arXiv:2606.06630v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The Cool Copper Collider (C3) is a linear accelerator (LINAC) concept based on compact, high gradient, and normal conducting accelerator technology to support Higgs boson studies at 250 GeV and 550 GeV center of mass. The C3 accelerator is ten kilometers in scale and consist of 2,200 RF stations for 550 GeV center of mass. To maintain the stringent beam quality required by the collider across the LINACs, each of the cavities has a dedicated...
The Saddle Point of Everything
arXiv:2605.30386v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The harmonic oscillator is the universal Hamiltonian of stable equilibrium. Its counterpart, the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO), is the Hamiltonian of unstable equilibrium: the saddle point of physical systems. It appears across disciplines, from condensed matter, quantum optics, and quantum chemistry to the Standard Model Higgs instability and quantum field theory near gravitational horizons.
CERN’s new chief on the gamble that could fix our picture of reality
When Mark Thomson was 13, he read a book about the European Organization for Nuclear Research, better known as CERN, a particle physics lab whose remit was to interrogate the fabric of reality. The book left him both fascinated by how the universe worked and frustrated by its lack of detail. More than 40 years later, Thomson is CERN’s director general, taking charge just as it shuts down the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for upgrades and decides where to place its next multibillion-pound bet.

A 5.3-million-year-old deep-sea whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone
Abstract Whale falls are biodiversity oases at seabeds1,2,3,4,5,6, yet their record from the oceans has remained sparse and fragmentary6,7. Here we report the discovery of a vast whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone (4,616- to 7,001-m depth), extending about 1,200 km along the sea floor of the southeastern Indian Ocean. This area has a deep and extensive accumulation comprising five modern natural whale-fall communities and 476 fossil cetaceans recorded.
