World-leading UK science facilities at risk amid £162m funding crisis
Diamond Light Source and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source face cuts of up to 20% as Science and Technology Facilities Council seeks savingsBritain’s scientific capabilities face “serious damage” with some national facilities at risk of closure under spending cuts that are being considered to meet spiralling costs at the government’s infrastructure funding agency. The concern surrounds sites funded and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), including the Diamond Light...

Spectral Scaling Laws of Muon
arXiv:2606.04058v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Orthonormalized update rules have rapidly become a leading choice of optimizer for training large language models, with recent open-source state-of-the-art models adopting Muon. To keep these updates tractable, Muon performs the orthonormalization with the Newton--Schulz (NS) iteration.
Spectral Scaling Laws of Muon
arXiv:2606.04058v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Orthonormalized update rules have rapidly become a leading choice of optimizer for training large language models, with recent open-source state-of-the-art models adopting Muon. To keep these updates tractable, Muon performs the orthonormalization with the Newton--Schulz (NS) iteration. Since NS is only approximate, directions with small singular values fail to be orthonormalized.
Why Muon Outperforms Adam: A Curvature Perspective
arXiv:2606.04662v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Muon improves training efficiency over Adam in large language-model training by about two times, but the local geometric source of this advantage remains unclear. Our work takes a first step toward demystifying Muon's superiority over Adam from a curvature perspective. First, we apply a second-order Taylor approximation to the training landscape and show that Muon achieves a larger one-step loss decrease than Adam at matched validation loss.
GPU optical photon Monte Carlo for noble liquid detectors: validation against Geant4 in a large liquid argon TPC benchmark
Announce Type: replace Abstract: Optical photon Monte Carlo simulation is a computational bottleneck for noble liquid Time Projection Chambers. Design studies require repeated, geometry dependent simulations of timing, wavelength shifting, and optical response, while reconstruction and particle identification workflows need labeled optical datasets. We present Simphony, a GPU optical simulation tool, formerly EIC-Opticks, built on Opticks with CUDA and NVIDIA OptiX. Simphony implements a GPU...

Investigation of Thick-GEM detectors fabricated in India for muography application
Announce Type: new Abstract: Muography, commonly known as muon tomography, is a passive, non-destructive imaging technique that utilizes naturally occurring cosmic-ray muons to visualize the internal density structures of large, static, or inaccessible objects. In course of developing a small prototype muography system for material identification that relies upon the multiple Coulomb scattering of muons in matter, we explored the possible use of Thick-GEM detector as muon tracking device. It...
X-ray Response of the Fully-Depleted, p-Channel SiSeRO-CCD
Announce Type: replace Abstract: We present an X-ray characterization of a fully depleted, 725 $\mu$m thick p-channel SiSeRO-CCD. Measurements with a $^{55}$Fe source yield an energy resolution of $54 \pm 0.9$ eV ($14.6 \pm 0.25 e^{-}$) at 5.9 keV for single-pixel events, indicating that the SiSeRO amplifier preserves the intrinsic charge resolution of the CCD under multi-sample non-destructive readout. Characterization with a $^{241}$Am source extends the response to higher-energy photons,...
