We identify a systematic failure mode in deep reinforcement learning (RL) termed Trace-Mediated Peak Bias (TMPB). At intermediate eligibility trace depths, agents irrationally prefer trajectories with high-magnitude reward ``peaks'' over alternatives with higher cumulative returns.
