Predictive metabolomics to decipher plant eco-evolutive tendencies and physiological traits

Plant ecological and evolutionary strategies are shaped by interactions between phylogenetic history and environmental constraints, resulting in leaf and stomatal traits. However, traditional trait-based and phylogenetic approaches often fail to fully explain biochemical mechanisms underlying ecological strategies, particularly for leaf and stomatal traits. Plant metabolomes integrate genetic, physiological, and environmental information and therefore represent a promising intermediate...

Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Grafted Tomato Plants to Salinity Stress: Evidence from the Syrian Coast

The research was carried out in Tartus (Syria), in a plastic greenhouse during the season 2024- 2025. Two tomato hybrids Levovil and Shannon were grafted onto two tomato Spirit and Maxifort rootstocks. Four levels of salinity (0, 50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl) were applied on the hybrids and grafted plants.

Why plant cells need heme: Hidden signal reshapes photosynthesis gene control

Why plant cells need heme: Hidden signal reshapes photosynthesis gene control Sadie Harley Scientific Editor Andrew Zinin Lead Editor For plants, light is an important environmental factor not only as a source of energy for photosynthesis, but also as a signal for capturing environmental information. Light signals are sensed by photoreceptor proteins called phytochromes. The amino acids that make up proteins are transparent and cannot absorb visible light.

Integrated Evaluation of Osmotic and Antioxidant Defense Mechanisms in Cotton Genotypes Exposed to NaCl Stress

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting cotton productivity worldwide by inducing osmotic imbalance, oxidative stress, and metabolic disturbances in plant tissues. The present study aimed to evaluate the physiological and biochemical responses of different cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) genotypes under NaCl-induced salinity stress through analysis of proline accumulation, antioxidant enzyme activities, and lipid peroxidation intensity. The experiment was conducted under...

Leaf Spectral Reflectance Prediction Using Multi-Head Attention Neural Networks

arXiv:2606.01432v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Accurate modeling of leaf spectral reflectance from physiological and biochemical traits is essential for advancing remote sensing applications in plant science and precision agriculture. Widely used radiative transfer models, such as PROSPECT-PRO, rely on generalized trait-reflectance relationships developed from a wide range of species, which may not fully capture the spectral behavior of specific crops like grapevines. In this study, we...

Ancient land plant reveals the evolution of a 400‑million‑year‑old UV‑B protection system

Sunlight provides the energy necessary for photosynthesis and growth, but it also exposes plants to harmful ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Plants must therefore strike a delicate balance between growth and protection. By studying Marchantia polymorpha, a plant similar to some of the earliest land plants, an international team led by scientists from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) sheds light on the evolution of fundamental UV-B perception mechanisms and plant adaptation strategies to light...

Sun erupts with 3 colossal solar flares in less than 24 hours, boosting chances for northern lights

Sun erupts with 3 colossal solar flares in less than 24 hours, boosting chances for northern lights A trio of major solar flares triggered radio blackouts across Earth and may spark impressive northern lights as possible solar storms head our way. Wow, the sun is certainly putting on quite a show this week. Our star just unleashed three powerful solar flares in less than 24 hours and potentially sending multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) hurtling toward Earth, raising the chances of...
