Galectin-3 recruitment at the Mycobacterium tuberculosis-containing phagosome is critical in macrophage but dispensable in epithelial cells

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) virulence relies in part on its ability to induce phagosomal membrane rupture, enabling bacterial access to the host cell cytosol. This process is largely mediated by the ESX{middle dot}1 secretion system, which is present in Mtb but absent from the vaccine strain BCG. Galectin{middle dot}3 (Gal3), a {beta}{middle dot}galactoside{middle dot}binding lectin, is recruited to damaged endomembranes and functions as a cytosolic sensor of membrane disruption.

Otoprotective effect of MnTBAP in cisplatin-induced hearing loss

Objective: Cisplatin, a life-saving chemotherapeutic drug, causes ototoxicity. Although sodium thiosulfate is used to prevent ototoxicity in pediatric patients, no other intervention has been approved for clinical use against cisplatin-induced hearing loss. Hence, there is an urgent need to identify drugs that prevent cisplatin ototoxicity.

BJP counters Rahul's 'economic tsunami' warning amid Iran war: 'Stop selling panic'

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday put up a strong counter against Rahul Gandhi's warning of an "economic tsunami" for India, dismissing it as "classic fear-mongering." The Lok Sabha leader of opposition had raised concerns over the escalating situation in the Middle East and its potential impact on India. Responding sharply, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya rejected Rahul's claims and argued that India is well-positioned to withstand any economic fallout from the Iran war.

Molecular glue degraders of HuR suppress BRAF-mutant colorectal cancer

Abstract BRAF gain-of-function mutations, particularly BRAF(V600E), affect roughly 10% of all patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), and portend poor prognosis with limited therapeutic interventions. BRAF inhibitors such as encorafenib are ineffective due to MAPK pathway reactivation driven by BRAF dimerization. Combined inhibition of BRAF and EGFR, although approved therapies, results in short survival benefits and frequent treatment resistance and relapse1,2,3.

Why cancer spreads more in middle age than in old age

Why cancer spreads more in middle age than in old age Melanoma may be most dangerous in middle age, as cancer briefly gains the upper hand against the immune system before losing it again in extreme old age. - Date: - May 31, 2026 - Source: - Temple University Health System - Summary: - Melanoma may not become steadily more dangerous with age as scientists once assumed. In a surprising discovery, researchers found that cancer spread was lowest in young mice, surged in middle-aged mice, and...

Mitochondria directly interact with the nuclear pore complex

Abstract Mitochondria regulate cellular processes through direct and indirect interactions with other organelles. A well-studied example has been contact with the endoplasmic reticulum at mitochondrial-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes1, which control pathways including redox and calcium homeostasis2,3. Recent studies have also reported direct mitochondria–nuclear membrane contacts in cancer cells and yeast that promote pro-survival signalling4,5.

MIT boffins take electrospray nozzles out of the cleanroom, into the 3D printer

The process for producing triple-layer drug-delivery particles and materials for tissue regeneration could get easier, thanks to a new advance in creating the electrospray nozzles used to make them. A team of MIT researchers has now used a 3D resin printer to output tiny electrospray nozzles without the expensive cleanrooms they normally require. A team led by MIT principal research scientist Dr. Luis Fernando Velásquez-García detailed its work developing tiny arrays of triaxial electrospray...

QR code menus headline readers' biggest food and restaurant gripes

It’s Wednesday, which means that it’s time to take inventory of everything we hate in another edition of The Gripe Report. Last week, in an edition some are calling "historic," "monumental," and "meh, it was something good to read on the can," I talked about some of my biggest food gripes. Stuff like restaurants that insist on planks of wood being better than good old-fashioned plates (they’re not), foods with outlandish flavors meant to make you go, "Whoa, that’s weird," and how brunch just...

Motorola's latest family of Razrs includes its first book-style foldable

Motorola's latest family of Razrs includes its first book-style foldable While we aren't expecting new foldable phones from Samsung and Google until later this summer and fall, Motorola is getting the ball rolling early with an updated portfolio of bendy Razr handsets, including its first book-style foldable. The Motorola Razr Fold was first announced back at CES before being shown off again at MWC last month, so it's not like its arrival is a complete surprise. But for fans of big foldable...
