Lignin to adipic acid in a high-yield chemical and biological redox process

Abstract Viable manufacturing pathways to produce bio-based chemicals from renewable feedstocks, such as lignin derived from plant biomass, are needed to decarbonize the chemicals manufacturing sector. Converting the recalcitrant lignin polymer to valuable bioproducts remains a longstanding challenge in biorefining, with the highest reported single-product yield from lignin currently around 20 wt% (refs. Most existing lignin depolymerization strategies target aryl–ether bond cleavage, which...

Wading bird populations in the New York–New Jersey Harbor are in decline

Wading bird populations in the New York–New Jersey Harbor are in decline Stephanie Baum Scientific Editor Robert Egan Associate Editor Urban estuaries can support thriving ecosystems despite bustling human activity. Noting that bird populations can serve as a key indicator of environmental health, researchers recently investigated trends in the New York–New Jersey Harbor, home to the largest breeding population of colonial nesting wading birds (herons, egrets, ibises) in the northeastern...

Two-component exciton condensates in an electron–hole bilayer

Abstract Macroscopic quantum coherence emerges when bosons condense into a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC)1,2,3,4,5. Excitons are a long-sought solid-state route to high-temperature BECs with strong interactions, electrical tunability and potentially multicomponent spinor order, but conclusive evidence for equilibrium condensation has remained elusive. Here we report evidence for two-component exciton BECs in MoSe2/hBN/WSe2 electron–hole bilayers6,7,8,9 by probing the spin–valley...

Building user-driven climate adaptation products

Abstract Climate adaptation products have traditionally been developed using a supply-driven model reliant on available climate information, leading to usability gaps1,2,3,4. To better meet user needs, the climate services field has recognized a need to shift towards a demand-driven model emphasizing co-production, that is, user-driven, scientifically informed products created through shared knowledge practices1,2,3,4,5. However, co-production can be challenging, especially for researchers...

NFL Trade Rumors: Chiefs eye Bears TE and Giants pass rusher

The Kansas City Chiefs have once again found themselves at the center of offseason trade speculation, with ESPN proposing two potential moves that could address key roster needs before the 2026 season. One scenario would send a 2027 third-round pick to the Chicago Bears for tight end Cole Kmet and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Another would see Kansas City acquire New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux for a 2027 fourth-round selection.

The Frame Problem

The Frame Problem To most AI researchers, the frame problem is the challenge of representing the effects of action in logic without having to represent explicitly a large number of intuitively obvious non-effects. But to many philosophers, the AI researchers' frame problem is suggestive of wider epistemological issues. Is it possible, in principle, to limit the scope of the reasoning required to derive the consequences of an action?

A 5.3-million-year-old deep-sea whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone

Abstract Whale falls are biodiversity oases at seabeds1,2,3,4,5,6, yet their record from the oceans has remained sparse and fragmentary6,7. Here we report the discovery of a vast whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone (4,616- to 7,001-m depth), extending about 1,200 km along the sea floor of the southeastern Indian Ocean. This area has a deep and extensive accumulation comprising five modern natural whale-fall communities and 476 fossil cetaceans recorded.
