Desperate search launched after man goes missing in weir during heatwave The public have been told to 'avoid the area' after a missing man was last seen entering the River Trent in Nottingham A man has gone missing after entering a river in Nottingham. Nottinghamshire Police says a search is ongoing after a man in his 30s was seen getting into the River Trent near Clifton Village - close to the Beeston Weir - at around 1.45pm today after concerns were raised for his welfare. Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue service raced to Beeston Weir this afternoon after receiving a 999 call at 1:50pm. They remained at the scene for a number of hours alongside police before reducing its attendance at around 4pm, and leaving at around 5:30pm. The man remains missing. "There is currently a large emergency service presence at Beeston Weir, following a 999 call at 1.50pm," the fire service said in a statement earlier this afternoon. "We ask the public to avoid the area whilst we deal with this incident." It comes as the UK smashed its 50-year-old temperature record for June, with a sweltering 36.1C recorded in Hampshire amid red weather warnings for extreme heat. The last hottest June on record was experienced in the same region back in 1976. At least 1,000 schools have been forced to close in the heat as the Met Office reported "exceptionally high temperatures continuing to rise". The latest incident comes as police have been called to multiple incidents involving young people entering water as the heatwave rumbles on.
