Ravens’ Calais Campbell’s mother found dead in Atlanta; brother a suspect in death

The mother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell was found dead in an Atlanta, and his brother is a suspect in the death, police said. The Atlanta Police Department said Campbell’s mother was found dead after officers responded to a welfare check call Tuesday afternoon. Upon arrival, police found a man barricaded inside the house, the department said. He was immediately detained. Further investigation led officers to an unresponsive elderly woman also inside the house. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Ciarre Campbell, Calais Campbell’s brother, was taken into custody, police said. It was not immediately clear whether Ciarre was living with their mother at the time of his death. Booking records show he is being held on two charges of murder, one count of aggravated assault and one charge of possession of a knife or firearm. Police say the investigation into the circumstances of her death is ongoing. “We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell’s mother,” a Ravens spokesperson said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time.” The team asked that everyone respect’s the family’s privacy “while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.” Calais Campbell played college football at the University of Miami, and was drafted to the NFL in the second round in 2008. He has since played for the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins, in addition to two stints on the Ravens. While he did not make it to the NFL, Ciarre Campbell played college football at Colorado State University and then at the University of Montana.
