England were given a rowdy welcome at 2.15am this morning when their team bus arrived in Mexico City. The crowd booed and jeered as the players got off the coach at their hotel in a city suburb. When they entered the exclusive hotel dozens of drinkers sitting at the bar immediately burst into a chant of “Mexico, Mexico, Mexico.” But the players shrugged off the abuse and smiled and waved as they walked through the lobby to reach their rooms. Jude Bellingham, Reece James and Jordan Henderson were among those who turned and smiled at the crowd. When they arrived at the hotel there were over 300 police officers on duty - many with riot shields. Others were heavily armed.
Darkness had fallen and as they moved into position they banged their shields on the ground. It had already been a chaotic 24 hours with the kick-off time for the big game being brought forward by six hours and then changed back again. But it didn’t seem to affect the Three Lions stars as they got off the bus after flying in from Kansas City to Mexico. They were welcomed by a local band and several of the players took the time to acknowledge the musicians.
While there were boos they were also welcomed by a handful of England supporters. One was wearing a red replica Michael Owen shirt from the 1998 finals in France.
There was light rain at times and the temperatures were cool - which England will hope will carry on over the weekend. Kevin Evans, 43, originally from London but now living in New Orleans came over yesterday for the match said: “It’s been pretty good spirited - they’ve been some boos but nothing nasty at all.
“Everyone was chatting together … it will be a different over the weekend.” It was a bizarre mix outside the hotel. A young couple brought their new born baby, a woman brought her two dogs.
One man waved a home-made Mexican flag. There have been fears that Mexico fans will disrupt the England players’ sleep.
At their last match against Ecuador hundreds of supporters surround the Westin hotel - not the hotel where Thomas Tuchel’s men are staying in - and kept them awake with chanting and firework displays.
England face Mexico at the Azteca stadium for the very first time. The Mexico City mayor Clara Brugada urged Mexican fans to behave “responsibly, carefully and with empathy.”
England fans are still scrambling for tickets. Fixtures in Mexico City have resulted in some of the highest resale prices, coupled with low supply, throughout the tournament, with home supporters eager to watch their team in action.
Before the draw in December, the England Supporters' Travel Club was given an allocation of 4,000 tickets for the match at the 80,824 stadium.
