UKHSA summer health alert for parents - need to know
- The UK Health Security Agency, which operates across England, issued a summer health alert. It warned parents about infections that could affect children during the six weeks holidays this year.
- The UKHSA specifically highlighted Cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis and commonly affects children aged one to five. The health organisation said: "While kids are enjoying their summer break, it's worth knowing what seasonal infections and health hazards to watch out for."
- Cryptosporidiosis symptoms typically last two weeks and follow a pattern of improving, then worsening, before full recovery. Children usually contract it from swallowing contaminated water whilst swimming or through contact with infected faeces during farm visits.
- Three other summer infections to watch for include Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which cause stomach issues such as diarrhoea, cramps, and fever. These can be transmitted through undercooked meat, unpasteurised dairy products and contaminated water.
- Tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease are also a concern during outdoor activities. The UKHSA warns: "Although most ticks will not carry diseases, it is important to be aware of the common symptoms and signs and when to seek help."
- Prevention measures include frequent handwashing, teaching children not to swallow swimming water and cooking meat thoroughly. As well as washing clothes on hot cycles, if someone becomes infected.
