Temperatures reached 35C this week as southern and eastern parts of England reached the heatwave threshold. Although the mercury should drop slightly this weekend, it shouldn’t be too long before we see 35C again. The GFS weather model shows temperatures rising on August 11, with highs of 31C possible across much of eastern, central and southern England, as well as parts of Wales close to the border. Maximum possible temperatures could reach 35C on August 12, GFS model data shows. The Midlands and south-east are expected to be the warmest regions, although 33C is possible as far north as Yorkshire. Highs of 34C are possible in East Anglia on August 13. The data shows much of central, southern and eastern England, as well as South Wales, could reach 31-33C. These temperatures would constitute the fifth official heatwave of 2026. An official heatwave is declared when temperatures hit the ‘heatwave threshold’ three days in a row. The threshold stands at 28C in the south-east, where conditions tend to be warmer, and drops to 25C the further away from the south-east you go. Temperature anomaly maps for August 11 to August 13 show the UK shaded in areas of dark red. This indicates that temperatures will rise well above the seasonal average. The GFS model maps suggest 11 counties could reach 35C or more later this month. They are all in England. However, there is also a risk of “thundery plumes” in places. The Met Office forecast for August 5 to August 14 states: “A generally rather changeable period looks likely, with many places likely to see some much needed rain or showers at times but also some more sunshine. Initially, some rain or showers will affect many parts, this heavy and possibly thundery in places. “After a drier, brighter few days, further changeable or unsettled conditions may develop as we head towards mid-August. This may be due to frontal systems moving in from the Atlantic or thundery plumes moving north from the continent or a combination of both. “Temperatures will likely be a little above average overall, and there is the potential for some very warm or hot and humid spells, especially in the south, although perhaps not the heat we have seen in recent weeks.”
