The 78-year-old - officially the world's longest serving football referee - has taken part in more than 5,000 matches since his first game in 1964. He began dishing out cards as a teenager after being was told he would never make it as a player. The retired financial director has now been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as he gears up to officiate in this season's Swansea Senior Leagues. Football-mad Ken said: "When you think of the number of countries in the world and the number of referees, I just can't believe it's now a fact that I'm the longest serving in the world. "It's something you can't believe in all honesty. To be the longest-serving referee in Wales would be an honour, Europe would be an even bigger honour, but when you talk about the whole world, it's unreal really." Evergreen Ken says he can still recall his first ever game as a ref and admits he had a "shocker". Ken officially took up his registration card with the West Wales football Association in 1964 and previously reffed matches involving Arsenal at Highbury, Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. And Ken, from Swansea, served as an official for Swansea City games in fixtures against Paris Saint Germain and manchester-united-fc>Manchester United. Telling how the United game stood out in his memory, he said: "It was one of the best nights of my career. "There were 28,000 fans inside the Vetch Field and as a local lad running the line in front of the North Bank, there were a lot of people who knew me. I had some abuse that night. "When I went to Arsenal it was a great occasion, but the best ground I have ever been to is the old White Hart Lane when I refereed Tottenham Hotspur. It was a fantastic place from a referring point of view with great facilities". Viv Nedin, Vice Chairman of the Swansea Referee Society said Ken was a fantastic servant to local football. He said: "It's incredible, and it's a fantastic achievement for our country. A number of us have been referees for 15 or 20 years, and that seemed like a lifetime to us. Over 60 years is tremendous; I think Wales should be proud of Ken Wright." Barrie Williams, manager of local club Morriston Sports and Social, said: "He's unbelievable, and you try and get some of our youngsters to be fit in my team, and they can't keep up with Ken. He says he's going to carry on refereeing until his body tells him differently, so I take my hat off to him. He's so respected around the boys in local football." Guinness said: "Ken's career reflects a rare and remarkable dedication to the sport, officiating through generations of changing rules, playing styles, and technology in the game while maintaining the fitness, focus, and love of football needed to keep stepping onto the field match after match, year after year. "Reaching such a milestone speaks not just to longevity but to a lifelong commitment to the game from the sidelines, long after many referees have long since hung up their whistle."
