Met Office names dates when sixth heatwave may roast UK as weather maps turn red Yet another heatwave could roast the UK next month as Met Office forecasters say more 'hot spells' are on the cards and weather models turn red once again The Met Office has said more heatwaves could be coming to the UK next month. Temperature anomaly maps from the GFS weather model show swathes of England and Wales shaded in dark red at the start of September. This indicates that temperatures could surge above the seasonal average once more - following on from a 38C heatwave last week. The Met Office has now said “late season hot spells or heatwaves” could be on the horizon. In its forecast for September 2 to September 16, the national weather agency explained “unsettled” conditions look likely at first. However, it adds that “signals for the prevailing weather patterns affecting the UK soon become weak”, meaning something close to “the climatological norm” could develop too, with a “northwest-southeast split in conditions” on the cards. “The north and northwest will probably see the lion's share of the rain and any strong winds, whilst the south and southeast will probably see the driest and sunniest weather,” it says. Temperatures are expected to be a little above average overall, the Met Office adds, while “there is a chance that late season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south”. The UK has already seen five heatwaves this year. BBC Weather forecast for September Forecasters at BBC Weather say warm air could push towards the UK from Europe in September. Drier conditions are more likely in the south, they add. The BBC Weather forecast states: “The second week of September may see a high pressure building again across continental Europe, although timing any such transition is difficult at this stage. "However, at some point this may push warmer air towards the UK, with temperatures ending up higher than the September average, highest across southern England. “Conditions could become drier as well, but more likely across the southern UK than the north, where it may still be wetter than normal, especially across Scotland.”
