Lightning bolts rained down across hotel balconies as the Balearic islands were last night hit by an aggressive storm, which sent holidaymakers running to their rooms screaming
A family's trip to Majorca turned terrifying after their resort was struck by a sudden storm so fierce it snapped the sun lounger's umbrellas.
The Mirror's Georgia Diebelius' break was interrupted when the sky lit up and the resort was battered by intense wind and rain last night, leaving a trail of destruction this morning. Emergency services were called to 75 incidents caused by the storm on the Balearic islands on Thursday as around 30 trees were felled.
Thunder and lightning could be seen flashing from the hotel room at Protur Safari Park, where the family were enjoying their fun-filled holiday. It was a scene of chaos at just after 10pm local time as holiday makers were forced to run back to their rooms screaming with a severe danger to life alert issued earlier that day.
The wind reached 100 kilometers per hour in some parts and Content Editor Georgia says the lightning got very, very close with her sister watching lightning bolts rain down across her balcony on the top floor.
Georgia said: "We had received orange weather warnings earlier in the day that a severe danger to life storm was set to arrive later in the evening.
"We were at a show at around 10pm when we started to see lightning in the distance so we made our way inside and moments later it was carnage! The rain was so heavy and the lightning was constant - it lit up the sky every few seconds.
"We could hear people screaming outside as they ran back to their rooms against the strong winds."
But the issues didn't stop there, with part of Georgia's sister's room struck by the bolts. "She is staying on the top floor of our hotel and she could see lightning bolts coming down across her balcony," she added.
"This morning there are hundreds of tiny dead flies and mosquitoes that are being cleared and a lot of the hotel's parasols were destroyed in the storm.
"Some of them literally bent and snapped despite being metal."
The problems may not be over for Brits holidaying on the Balearic islands. The whole of Mallorca is on yellow alert for heavy rain until 6pm on Friday. Forecasters say unsettled conditions are due to continue on Saturday, with thunderstorms possible.
Things are soggy back home, and after months of heatwaves brought drought for much of the country and more than 1,000 wildfires, the middle of August has finally brought some much-needed rain.
This coming weekend will stay relatively dry, but wet weather returns on Tuesday as thunderstorms move from south to north, soaking millions.
But it won't impact everyone with weather forecasting models suggest temperatures could rise into the high-20s and possibly even reach 30C again next week.
The Met Office forecast for Sunday to Tuesday is: “Mostly dry with sunny spells, though cloud and a few showers may affect northern areas.
“Rain and thundery showers could develop in the south, spreading north later. Temperatures near average.”
