Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are just weeks away from moving back to the United Kingdom, after spending six years in California. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be heading back to Harry’s home country by the end of August, with their children Archie and Lilibet both enrolled in UK schools for the start of the school year in September.
While their return to Britain will be a major move for Harry as he works to mend his relationship with his family, Meghan’s family will remain in the US. Since the Sussexes moved to California in 2020 after quitting their royal duties, they have spent much time with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.
Doria, 69, has been a constant presence in Harry and Meghan’s life while living in Montecito, as they spend much time together as a family, with Doria adoring her grandchildren Archie and Lilibet.
Meghan’s mother, who lives under two hours away from Montecito in a residential district outside Los Angeles, is believed to stay with the Sussexes often, where she can stay either in the family's main nine-bedroom house or in a separate two-bedroom guesthouse within the grounds.
Despite the Sussexes’ close relationship with Doria, sources told TMZ that she will not be joining Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet in their move to the UK, as she is settled in California where she has a community of friends. The Mirror has contacted Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson for comment.
Meghan’s mother has played an important role in her life, and was on hand to help look after Archie and Lilibet in 2022 when the late Queen Elizabeth passed away. The Sussexes were already in the UK at the time of the Queen’s death, after travelling to Manchester for a summit, then Dusseldorf for an Invictus event and then back to London.
They ended up having to extend their stay when Harry's grandmother died on September 8, remaining to make various public appearances including greeting mourners outside Windsor Castle and attending the funeral in Westminster Abbey.
Doria, a social worker and yoga instructor, has generally avoided the spotlight since attending the royal wedding at Windsor Castle in May 2018. She attended the royal wedding solo, as her ex-husband and Meghan’s father Thomas Markle, did not attend.
Despite keeping a low profile, Doria has occasionally featured in Meghan’s Instagram posts, appearing in photos and videos from Sussex family trips to Disneyland, as well as a trip to the park for Mother’s Day.
A source told the Mail On Sunday in 2020 that Harry 'in particular turns to Doria for advice' and she is 'like the Queen – she never complains and never explains'.
They added at the time: “She's laid-back, and people see her nose ring and dreadlocks which are cool - but make no mistake, she has a core of steel. Underestimate her at your peril.
“Meghan has always trusted her completely but she has become a rock to Harry who, of course, lost his own mother so young. Doria has a great warmth. She's a brilliant cook and is very motherly, but she isn't someone who seeks attention, and for Harry her discretion and silence mean the world.”
