A man was arrested shortly after the incident. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident in a post on X as "serious", saying it had taken place "right after the summer break". "There are reports of injured people. We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively," he added. "Our thoughts are with all those affected." The city government said it had set up a crisis centre in a sports hall near the school. The government of Västmanland County, where Fagersta is located, said "many people" had been affected and that police, firefighters and healthcare workers were among those responding. Several nearby schools were placed under lockdown following the incident, and roadblocks were set up, authorities said. Brinell School has just under 500 students, according to Sweden's public broadcaster SVT.
