Sainsbury’s has issued an urgent recall for a popular food item, with shoppers warned not to eat it. The supermarket is recalling its Inspired to Cook Pitted Black Olives after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the product, according to the Food Standards Agency. The recall affects 120g packs with use-by dates of September 6, September 7 and September 10, 2026. Customers who have bought an affected pack have been told not to eat the olives and instead return them to their nearest Sainsbury’s store for a full refund. The FSA said symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes can be similar to flu and may include a high temperature, muscle aches or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can become more severe and lead to serious complications such as meningitis. Some people are particularly vulnerable to listeria infections, including those aged over 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies under one month old and people with weakened immune systems. Sainsbury’s will display point-of-sale notices in stores selling the affected product explaining the recall and what customers should do. No proof of purchase is required for customers returning the recalled olives for a full refund.
