Students and staff members at the University of Warwick in Coventry were asked to leave the premises as part of a "precautionary evacuation" following the discovery. An extensive emergency services presence was reported at the scene following the incident, which took place at around 2.30pm yesterday (September 7). A University of Warwick spokesman told Coventry Live: "The University of Warwick followed its established safety procedures after a report of a suspicious package on 7 September. A precautionary evacuation was carried out while the item was assessed by emergency services." The package was evaluated by emergency services, who established the item was not dangerous. The university spokesman added: "The package was found not to be a cause for concern. "Once this had been confirmed, normal activity resumed. We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation." Social media images show a number of police vehicles and a police cordon at the university's campus, which is located on the outskirts of Coventry. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police told Mirror Online: "We received a report of a suspicious package being found at the University of Warwick, Gibbet Hill Road, Coventry, yesterday afternoon (7 September). "It was assessed and established not to be suspicious. A temporary evacuation was carried out as a precaution." The university is due to start welcoming students for the new academic year from September 24, with the autumn term officially starting on October 5. The university has a student population of more than 28,000.
