Reports indicate that the Canadian-born Indigenous star died following a fatal accident that occurred on Saturday during a rodeo event held at Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta. Having worked within the film and entertainment industry for more than three decades, Lightning contributed to notable projects including Backroads, Dreamkeeper, Older Than America and Walker, Texas Ranger. Among her most prominent screen roles was Lainie Proudfoot, whom she portrayed in 2002 for the third series of comedy-drama Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. The show originally followed British workmen placed together on a building site in West Germany, with the 2002 series relocating the lead characters to undertake construction work in the United States. Mourning her loss, Lightning’s daughter Crystle published a post on Facebook, sharing that she was left "shattered in every way possible" following the death of her mother. The actor and musician, 45, also said she felt “wrecked” and added: “I have lost my mother, my sons’ Kohkum (grandmother), my matriarch, my role model, my confidant.” Crystle, who has appeared in TV shows such as Yellowstone, The Good Doctor and Three Pines, shared another post urging her mother to “come to me in my dreams”. “I’m channelling your strength. In the emotional post, Crystle recalled the last time she saw her mother, writing: “I looked in your eyes and waved and said ‘have fun mama’. “I know eventually I’ll get some clarity and an understanding but right now I have none. “I wish I could hold you one more time and touch your beautiful new silver hair.” Actor Tim Healy, who appeared alongside Lightning in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, described the actor as a “lovely lady and a joy to work with” in a tribute to X. Canadian actor Jessica Matten was among those sharing their condolences. “I’m so sorry Crystle. Prayers to you and your family. I was with your mom in July and as always, she was the kindest, warmest human ever,” the Dark Winds actor wrote. Lily Gladstone, the first Native American to win the Golden Globe Award for best actress in a motion picture, said: “Sending you and your family all my love.” Lightning’s other notable TV appearances include roles in Trickster, Three Pines and The West Wing, while her film credits feature Land and Older Than America – the latter of which marking her directorial debut. She also recently had a role in 2025 horror Die My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence, and she has worked as a producer on projects including The Wind & The Reckoning and Sawtooth. Beyond her acclaimed career in the entertainment industry, Lightning was active in efforts to expand Indigenous participation and representation in film and media. Her many accolades include prizes at the American Indian Film Festival and in 2010 she was the recipient of the White House Project’s Epic Award for emerging artist. Lightning also co-founded Tribal Alliance Productions (TAP), a Native-owned company that promotes Indigenous storytelling and supports creators across the stages of production. Enoch Cree Nation shared a statement to Facebook on Saturday following a fatal incident which took place during its Indian relay event at its rodeo grounds, saying it is “mourning the loss of a community member”. “Our community is grieving, and we are holding them in our thoughts and prayers,” it added.
