Brewers Fayre, Millets, Beefeater and more shut hundreds of locations this week — full list It is the latest blow to the high street A number of large UK businesses have made the tough decision to close their doors this week. It is a challenging time for businesses across the UK due to changing spending habits and costs. This week, major restaurants and popular retail stores have announced closures. Pub restaurant chains Brewers Fayre and Beefeater closed over 100 sites this week as both companies closed. Meanwhile, a popular outdoor company is closing three more UK stores. Plus, a homeware brand closed down its first-ever store. Millets Outdoor company Millets is closing three UK stores as it launches "everything must go" sales. It is preparing to close its branches in Chippenham, Tenby and Bracknell. The chain sells outdoor clothing, footwear and camping equipment. It has 47 stores across the UK but once had around 120. The Chippenham branch launched a closing down sale on September 8, with a sale already underway at the Tenby store. Bracknell's site closes on September 12. Millets' branches in Portsmouth, Ipswich, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Hitchin are among those to have already closed. Søstrene Grene Popular homeware company Søstrene Grene is closing down its first ever store. It opened its first UK site in Nottingham's Victoria Centre in 2016 and has 330 stores across 17 countries. A closing-down sale has been taking place in the store, which will close on September 13. A sign in the window reads: “We are sorry. Unfortunately, this store will be closing as the landlord is planning a redevelopment of the premises. “Please note that as we prepare for the closure, some items may no longer be available in the store and many items will be reduced in price. The sisters would like to thank all customers for their support over the years.” Beefeater and Brewers Fayre The two pub restaurant chains have closed every single site this week. Beefeater closed its 106 locations on September 10, while Brewers Fayre shut 89 restaurants on September 7. Approximately 30,000 members of staff are employed across both restaurant chains. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that both would be shutting as part of a wider strategy by parent company Whitbread, which also runs the Premier Inn hotel chain. Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul said at the time: "We plan to convert all our remaining branded restaurants to an integrated food and beverage offer that is preferred by our hotel guests and will unlock the addition of more highly profitable extension rooms. "Our continued efforts to drive our commercial plan and efficiencies will extend our market-leading position and allow us to take share from our competitors, many of which are struggling to grow." A number of the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre sites will be transformed into approximately 600 additional Premier Inn hotel rooms, while the remaining locations are "expected to be sold as going concerns".
