3.5 million people have switched phone or broadband provider as household bills soar Ofcom research suggests many out-of-contract customers could save over £100 a year - we explain how to cut your costs Around 3.5 million people have switched their phone or broadband provider over the last two years as household bills continue to soar. New data from Ofcom also revealed 4% of telecoms customers missed a payment last quarter – as many struggle with the rising cost of living. Additionally, 12% said they made changes to a service while 10% reduced their spend elsewhere and some 7% cancelled a service. Ofcom research suggests that many out-of-contract customers who have broadband, landline and pay TV from the same provider could save over £100 a year by switching. One in three of these customers were out of contract last year. Ofcom launched its "one touch" process in 2024, which means households only need to speak to the new broadband or landline provider to switch service, so you do not need to contact your old provider. More than 300 providers are signed up to the process. Natalie Black, Ofcom’s Group Director, Infrastructure and Connectivity, said: “We know that many people feel worried about their bills creeping up, but with a few simple steps some customers could achieve big savings. “Our advice to everyone with a broadband, mobile, pay TV or landline contract is to check whether you’re in or out of contract, compare the offers out there, and if right for you then switch and save.” How to save money on broadband and mobile If you're out of contract, start by comparing prices elsewhere. Check how many minutes and texts you currently use, or your broadband speed, as many people pay for higher allowances that they do not actually need. Once you know what type of package you need, use a comparison website to find the cheapest deals on the market. You can then either switch to a new provider if you have found a cheaper deal, or go back to your existing provider and try to haggle them down. If you claim benefits, check if you are eligible for a cheaper social tariff, with prices starting from £12 a month for broadband and £10 for mobile. The eligibility varies between suppliers and there isn't an exact list of benefits that could entitle you to the support. Check with your broadband or mobile supplier to see if you are eligible for their social tariff.
