A British tourist has died while swimming at a popular tourist spot near Bali, according to local reports.
The 54-year-old man drowned on Sunday afternoon at Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida island, which is part of Indonesia's Klungkung Regency, local police said.
"The victim was a British citizen who was on vacation with his family," Klungkung Police spokesperson I Dewa Nyoman Alit Purnawibawa was quoted as saying by Indonesian news outlet detikcom.
The man and his family were on a sightseeing tour of Nusa Penida, a small island south-east of Bali, when they stopped at Crystal Bay, according to police reports cited by detikcom. They arrived at the beach at about 2.30pm local time (7.30am GMT), and their driver gave them an hour to spend there.
When the man failed to return to the meeting point, the driver began searching for him and was soon told that he had drowned while swimming, according to reports.
The man was taken by ambulance to Griya Penida Medical Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
The police spokesperson reportedly said: "According to the medical team, the victim was pronounced dead after fluid entered his lungs, causing cardiac arrest as a result of drowning."
It came a day after an Australian woman died after falling from a cliff at Kelingking Beach, also on Nusa Penida.
The 29-year-old woman from Queensland fell about 80 metres from the cliff onto the beach on Saturday morning, according to local reports.
A spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that the government was providing consular assistance to the woman’s family.
"We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time," they said. "The family have requested privacy at this difficult time."
