Weather maps show -2C chill after Polar Vortex forecast – every county below 10C Bitterly cold temperatures look to be right around the corner as weather forecasting models show the mercury plunging below 10C in every part of the UK in October Weather forecasting models suggest daytime temperatures could soon drop below 10C across the entire country, potentially plummeting as low as -2C in the far north. Forecasters have already warned that this year’s El Nino could lead to a collapse of the Polar Vortex in the coming months, meaning the UK may face extreme wintry conditions. The GFS weather model shows bitterly cold conditions may come as early as next month, with minimum possible temperatures dropping to -2C in Scotland at midday on October 11, 6C in the south-east, 5C in the Midlands, and 9C in Wales. At 6pm on October 11, the data suggests the mercury might rise to just 9C in and around London, with only the south-west of England seeing double-digit temperatures. Similarly chilly conditions are expected on October 12, with the data showing minimum possible temperatures of 2-5C across much of England and Wales at midday. Temperatures are actually expected to be warmer in Northern Ireland and Scotland - but only reaching 6-7C in most areas. Temperatures should rise by 6pm on October 12, reaching 10-12C across southern, eastern and central England according to the data. Anomaly maps for this period show the UK shaded in areas of deep blue. This indicates that temperatures will drop well below the average for this time of year. UK faces Polar Vortex collapse during El Nino Experts say a Polar Vortex collapse could bring cold and snow to the UK over the coming months, thanks to what is expected to be the strongest El Nino on record. “Through the latter part of the winter, following a peak in El Niño, the stratospheric Polar Vortex can become weaker, leading to an increased chance of Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events unfurling, increasing the potential for cold weather,” the Met Office explains. SSW refers to warming between 10km and 50km above the Earth’s surface, and can cause cold air to rush downwards, impacting the jet stream and potentially creating a ‘blocking pattern’. These patterns can keep cold conditions locked in place over the UK for an extended period of time.
