Is this M&S To Good Too Go Surprise Bag really worth the money... let's take a look
Marks and Spencer is perhaps one of my favourite places to shop - from clothes to food - this place has it all. Now it's joined the Too Good To Go club - so I of course had to try and get my hands on a Surprise Bag.
I paid £3.80 and this sounds like a bargain, right? Well... that’s what I thought until I opened mine and realised there were no cookies. I’d seen other people getting the iconic (and mouth-watering) M&S cookies in their bags and as someone who absolutely loves them, I was gutted I didn't get a pack myself.
BUT... after my initial disappointment, because cookies really aren't a big deal, let's be honest, I actually realised I’d got pretty good value for money. I paid the price of a coffee and the minimum value is meant to be £10.20. When I added everything up, my bag came to £11.50, so I’d still got almost three times what I paid for it.
It wasn’t the exciting cookie-filled haul I’d seen other people getting, but it was definitely still worth more than what I’d paid. In my bag, I received:
- Collection Crafted Nocellara and Kalamata Olive Sourdough, £3.50
- Collection Crafted Seeded Sourdough Baguette, £2.50
- Chocolate Twist, £1.50
- Six Seed Rolls (x2 at £1 each), £2
- Dunked N’ Loaded Matcha and Strawberry doughnut, £2
To make use of my bag and ensure there was no waste, I ended up making bone broth (with leftover chicken) and having the baguette on the side, which made for a really easy meal. The roll was another meal sorted, as I had a bacon roll to kick-start my day. Suddenly, my slightly disappointing bag was starting to feel a lot more useful.
And then there was the sourdough. I uploaded a TikTok about the bag and one commenter suggested that, rather than letting it sit around until it went stale, I turn the whole loaf into garlic bread and freeze it.
So naturally that's exactly what I did and now I’ve got homemade garlic bread ready to go for another meal, which is probably my favourite part of the whole experience. It made me realise that with Too Good To Go, you don’t necessarily need to get exactly what you wanted to get your money’s worth.
The partnership between the retailer and Too Good To Go supports M&S' wider Plan A goal to halve food waste by 2030 and ensure edible surplus food is eaten.
So, would I get another M&S Too Good To Go bag? Absolutely. Was I disappointed when I saw there were no cookies? Definitely. But if I need them that badly, the bakery is literally around the corner. And to be fair, I did have a pack of their Gingerbread and White Chocolate cookies a few weeks ago.
But for £3.80, getting £11.50 worth of food, making a meal from it, getting a sandwich and having garlic bread waiting in my freezer feels like a pretty good result. I’ll just be keeping my fingers crossed for those cookies next time.
Surprise Bag contents vary depending on bakery surplus available on the day and specific products cannot be guaranteed. M&S confirms on its website: "Each of the Surprise Bags will include three to four bakery products to a minimum retail price of £10.20 for just £3.80.
"Customers can order their Surprise Bags through the Too Good To Go app and collect them Monday to Saturday, one hour before their local store closes."
