Forecasting models suggest a major weather front could be just days away from sweeping across the UK, bringing snow and torrential rain.
The GFS weather model shows the rain moving in from the Atlantic in the early hours of October 22, drenching most of Wales and England by 6am.
By 9am, the maps show the precipitation falling as snow over Northumberland National Park, the Pennines and southern parts of Scotland. The data suggests snow could fall at a rate of around 4mm per hour, with some lighter flurries also hitting the Highlands.
Most of the rain will have moved into the North Sea by midday, according to the maps, but some light snow could persist in western Scotland and around the Scotland-England border.
Met Office snow forecast
This comes after the Met Office said snow could fall in some parts of the UK this weekend.
The national weather agency said Saturday may “begin on a chilly note”, although “brighter conditions” are on the cards in southern areas.
“Showers will move through widely during the day, with northern parts of the UK likely to see the most frequent and intense downpours,” the forecast said.
The showers are expected to be heaviest in Scotland, where this is also a risk of hail and thunder. The Met Office added: “There could even be a temporary sprinkling of snow over the highest ground, adding a wintry flavour to the autumn weather.”
BBC Weather forecast
The BBC Weather forecast states: “[Saturday] is expected to remain windy, with showers in the north, especially the north-west, but southern regions should be generally dry with long sunny spells.
“Largely dry and settled on Sunday. There will be plenty of sunny spells, but in the southwest, cloud and patchy rain will move in by the end of the day.
“Monday will see some brightness in the east, but it will then turn cloudy and damp across the UK with spells of light rain.”
