High street fashion retailer Next has issued an urgent product recall for a popular line of women's summer footwear. A safety warning has been issued that the shoes could fail structurally during use, potentially causing shoppers to fall and injure themselves.
The recall specifically targets the Mint Velvet Raya Espadrille Wedge Sandals. According to an official safety notice published by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the fashion items present a distinct risk of injury to the wearer. Testing and consumer reports revealed a critical manufacturing defect where the main footbed can unexpectedly become dislodged and detached from the underlying wedge heel while someone is actively walking in them.
Authorities have warned that if the footbed separates from the heel without warning, the wearer could easily lose their balance, leading to dangerous falls and physical injuries. As a result, officials confirmed that the products fail to meet the mandatory safety standards set out in the UK’s General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
The safety alert includes two specific model numbers: Y79431 and Y79434. The affected footwear is described as light tan and brown open-toe wedge sandals, featuring a distinctive braided jute espadrille mid-wedge heel, an ankle strap buckle fastening, and gold-tone stud detailing.
Next has taken immediate action by launching a full recall from customers. The retail giant is actively tracing transactions and contacting all shoppers who purchased the shoes directly to alert them of the hazard.
Anyone owning a pair of these specific Mint Velvet sandals is strongly advised by safety regulators to stop using them immediately to avoid harm. Impacted customers should follow the return instructions provided in Next's direct communications, or reach out to the retailer's customer service team to arrange for a full refund or a product replacement.
A gov.uk statement reads: "Next have contacted consumers who purchased the heels directly. Owners are advised to stop using the product and follow the instructions sent by Next to arrange for a refund or replacement."
What is a product recall?
A product recall is a request by a manufacturer or a government regulatory body to return, exchange, or repair a consumer product after it is found to have safety flaws or manufacturing defects. Recalls are initiated to protect the public from potential risks, which can range from minor mechanical issues to severe health hazards, such as choking risks in toys, fire hazards in electronics, or structural failures in footwear.
While companies frequently issue voluntary recalls as a proactive safety measure, government watchdog agencies also have the authority to mandate a recall if a product violates national safety regulations and poses an immediate threat to consumers. Once a safety hazard is identified, the responsible company must take immediate corrective action to locate and notify the end users.
This process typically involves issuing public safety notices, publicising details across news media, and directly contacting registered buyers or loyalty card members to explain the specific defect. The notification clearly outlines the exact models or batch numbers affected, details the potential injuries or consequences of continued use, and provides explicit instructions on how consumers can safely return or dispose of the item.
Manufacturers are legally required to provide consumers with an appropriate remedy at no additional cost. Depending on the nature of the defect and the type of product involved, this remedy generally takes the form of a full refund, a direct replacement, or a complimentary repair using modified, safer components. Consumers are always strongly urged to check recall registries immediately when an alert is issued and to cease using any affected products to eliminate the risk of personal harm.
